Mattson, 1kW Off Grid Bergey Wind Turbine, Walker Basin, California

Bob and Darla Mattson fell in love with a remote piece of land in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, in the rambling rural community of Walker Basin. It has great views, neighbors who are distant but ever ready to lend a hand, and no utilities. When the Mattsons built their home here a few years ago, they installed a diesel generator. It was reliable enough, but cost them about $300 a month to run their home, shop, and well to provide water for them and their horses. Walker Basin is located in a windy valley, perfect for a wind turbine. They chose a Bergey 1kW wind turbine as a start for their renewable system. Rain or Shine installed the Bergey on the top of a small hill near their home. Now instead of listening to the generator, they sit and drink a beer and watch the turbine spin. It has run almost every day since the installation, and has cut their diesel bill in half. In the future, the Mattsons may install some solar modules to further reduce the diesel usage.
